Hello.

I have been looking around trying to figure out which turbo came on a 89 TC 8v engine. It looks to be a te04h but I see t03 mentioned, and I can't seem to find a definite if it is either a turbo I or turbo II engine.

I need to find a turbo for a TC I am probably going to be picking up, but I can't figure out which one would go on it. I would just look at the car, but it is an hour from me right now.

Thank you for your help.

I believe the TC also came with a Turbo I, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Anyhow, look for the intercooler. If there is an intercooler it is the same Turbo II you would find in a Daytona or LeBaron and it would have the Garrett T3.

I am looking for gray interior trim for a J-body (1987-1989) LeBaron coupe hardtop. If you have anything please PM me before throwing it out. I am also selling tan trim if you're interested.

TC came with either:
3.0 V6
2.2 TII Auto (detuned) - 160HP
2.2 Masi 16V

The 2.2 8V is a standard issue T2 with less boost to protect the weak automatic. It's kind of sad really, when you see how much power a well built A413 can take (stephane has like 700hp!) and yet they felt it couldnt handle 175hp?

FYI you can use either turbo, because they have the same pattern. However, it should have a Garret T03.

It suppose to have a Garret Turbo like all TII cars.

It is one of the two TII cars with automatic in the state.

Okay awesome. I appreciate the help.

Also, anyone know a good place to get a rebuilt one from? There probably tons of places to go to online, I just wasn't sure if anyone has had any experiances with any retailers.

And I was reading about the weak transmissions. Is doing pretty much anything to get more power out of the car pretty much just putting the transmission at risk? I read that going to about 200 ft/lbs with the transmissions in the TC is pretty much their breaking point.

EDIT: Now thinking about it, is this the same transmission that came in a Caravan? Can these be swapped out for a stronger unit, or perhaps be built up some if it comes to that?

I am thinking about maybe trying to get some more power out of it if it is feasable. I don't want to go nuts with it or anything. I just figured that if I need a new turbo, I may as well check out my options.

Thanks again.

www.******************** for turbo rebuilt
Might want to check your local turbo stores too.

What kind of budget do you have?
Yes, you can built the automatic transmission as strong as you want.

Budgetwise I'm not sure yet. I am still concidering if I want to do anything to make it not stock, since they are somewhat collectible.

Just from what I have read, it takes forever to spool and the factory exhaust and tranny sucks.

I am assuming if I do try to get more power out of it, I would need a new exhaust, do something with the SMEC, and tranny. Laborwise its not a huge deal, I can probably do pretty much everything myself. (besides rebuild stuff, and know a really good tranny guy through a friend.)

I am not trying to do anything ridiculous, just try to up the power some. I guess 8ish second 0-60 or before I run out of room in the factory fuel system. I'm still really undecided at this point honestly.

Swap in a 88 or 89 TII computer, instant 14hp gain and upto 200lb ft of torque. Put a G-valve in and have it set at 14psi, that's about where the limit is on those stock TII injectors.

Sounds like a plan. Now is there an easy way to set those g-valves, or will I probably have to grab a boost gauge?

Will the transmission in it be able to handle that?

And after really thinking about it, I don't think I would want to do much more than that. Maybe that, exhaust, drop in filter, nothing amazing. This car is just sort of an opportunity to drive something neat for a while, then maybe sell it and make some money. I should just leave it mostly stock, and just have less problems to worry about. Changing the transmission is just too much money and time into something that I am probably not going to keep, I actually really dislike automatic cars.

So, I guess it comes down to, could the stock transmission take the new computer, an exhaust and an intake with out blowing up? Or are they really just miserable peices of engineering?

the transmission can be modified to take anything you can dish out. Cliff ramsdell has a street strip for sale for $600 right now. You still need a torgue converter for it. For stock look, the bigger exhaust fwd.com, TU for 3" swingvalve and downpipe (backordered) , bigger turbo, ported head with bigger valves, ported intake exhaust mani, The bottom end is forged except pistons. TU cal and turbo forged pistons.
g valve directions.http://www.backesfamily.com/TCProjects/
Also has directions on repairing the odometer that breaks in every one.

So with these g valves do you just set them the highest the computer can go? Because I know with some cars you can only go to what the computer is set at. Example, can you put one at like 13 psi on a stock turbo II?

Also, are these used to smooth out the boost curve? Say again if its set at 13 psi, can it top at 13psi anytime?

I've been trying to find a SMEC from a Daytona TII to replace the detuned TC SMEC. I look for part #'s 5233246 & 5235069. Anyone know if other 88-89 Daytona SMECs will work? I was told only manual Daytona SMEC would work...

Only 88-89 TII manual cars will have the SMEC you want.

Post on the WTB section on this forum.
