Is it a direct swap? I want to upgrade the the garrett and then intercool it, or there any other turbo's I could look at that would swap without major modifications?
edit: also any trick to help it spool a little quicker

pretty much, cept you need a garrett swingvalve, garrett oil and coolant lines, drainback tube... and wastegate

garrett T-2 turbo spools pretty quick compared to the instant spool of the mitsu. if you want faster spool and such, get an exhaust system, port the exhaust manifold, get a grainer valve so your wastegate dosnt creep open

Will the manual boost controller I just bought do the same job as a grainer valve?

yes manual boost controller and grainer are same thing...atleast in most cases....unless you got a fish valve....
basicaly if it has a spring in the design, its probobly what you want to have.
garrett bolts right up to exhaust manifold, need some new oil and coolant feed lines like everyone said......but other than that its pretty basic. Also will need a garrett swing valve...here is a good opportunity to home make a 3" swing valve and exhaust system.
You will have to take the head off to change the turbos though....some say they can do it without taking off the head, I think they must be freaks to be that flexible.
Spool up time can be reduces by a manual boost controller (aka grainger), a good exhaust system, ported head/exhaust manifold or header, nitrous , and cam & ignition timing.

done it 3 times without taking off the head, I can do a complete swap within 4 hours... its really not that hard at all. everyone always thinks you gotta pull the head but you dont.... not trying to flame what alberta daytona was saying or anything... but you gotta remember, hes had a J body, so theres a pretty good amount of room. plus no new gasket or head bolts.

i managed to take the turbo out in 1 hour but i did have custom parker fiting for the turbo and lines that made the job 100 times easier theres 2 bolts youre going to get creative but from the driver side and under car you should be able to get it out, i took the turbo from the space between the tranny and engine of course i had no air box at the time, also i have a daytona so i have lots of space, i cant imagine getting a turbo from a omni or something small tough, in that case ill take the head off

I got a daytona 2....I couldnt get enough leverage to crank loose the bolts that held it to the manifold....and 2 of them you could only rotate 1/8th a turn at a time....ratcheting wrenches would be a plus.
I bow to those of you who can change turbos without taking the head off. I gotta change another busted turbo now.....no boost sucks...but I will also bolt on the ported head....so the heads comming of no matter what .

well I have any tool you would ever need anyway...I work at a chrysler dealership in the shop and I had my head off 2 monts ago and put in a new headgasket and t-belt.
now as far as ignition timming goes If I advance it in small increments untill I spark knock then go back a bit should do the trick?
I just found a garrett for sale localy, with a swing valve, but where would I measure to check it's size? I am guessing it is atleast 2.25.
also think I am getting a intercooler off a rb20 skyline

smallest is 2.25 largest is 2.5
6hp difference between the 2.
measure the inside diameter of the opening that connects to the down pipe . You got a shop, use those fancy tools to make custom bigger....BIG CUSTOM .
yes advace in small incriments, your idea should to the trick.

i never had to swap oil lines when swapping to a Garrett, the mitsus lines fit great with a bit of reshaping, not a big deal for me. coolent lines, dont know, capped them off, dont use them.
