Im trying to choose the best turbo for my application. Im running a 2.2 engine in a dunebuggy/sandrail, I want 300whp and room for more when I beef up my transmission. This isnt a drag or street application, I think it would be closest to rally. When going up big sand hills the rpms drop and my boost comes down which makes rpms drop more and its a circle until I cant make it up the hill, so I need something that makes good boost in the lower rpms. I need quick spool up for the terrain im going through.

I looked at the super50 trim compressor maps and it looks like its a really efficient turbo in low boost as well as high boost, how is the spool up on these? I am also running full time alcohol/water injection in place of an intercooler.

what would you guys recommend?

spool depends on your exhaust side, not the compressor side. Never think about spoolup when choosing compressors. Choose a compressor that fits your motor and application, then pick an exhaust side to compliment your goals.

sorry, I dont have a specific answer for what exhaust side is correct since I have never used a turbo that small.

They have sand rails in Michigan? Thought that was a western thing, more power to ya A ball bearing center section turbo will outspool a plain bearing turbo any day... GT28rs maybe...

yeah michigan has a couple good offroad areas, silver lake sand dunes is the most popular. But my sandrail is street legal too

arent ball bearing turbos really expensive?

Try a T04E 50 trim with a stage III or Stage IV in a .48 A/R housing.

im assuming the stage 1,2,3 has to do with the exhaust turbine, could someone explain what they mean?

but I also heard a stage III has a lot of lag

most use the larger stages in a .63 A/R housing. That's why it's somewhat more "laggy" than what you'd find compaired to the stock turbo.

The stage of a turbine wheel is just the size of the wheel. Stage I is a stock T3 turbine wheel. Stage II, III, IV, and V are just larger wheels. The turbine housing must be ported to use any of the larger wheels.

Larger wheel means more flow potential, over stock.

dosn't gearing have a lot to do with spool? If you are going up a hill you should theoretically have more boost because there is more of a load on the engine.

This is the thinking you want to follow.

If his RPMs are dropping due to the fact of him not being able to climb the hill, then the boost will drop too. Just think, if the air flow isn't going through the head, then theres no extra air to produce the air needed to spin the turbine.

I'd go with a T4 VNT turbo. Very fast spool, and okay top end. The downside... the housings are so tiny that the wheels are only good for around 15-16psi. I believe you start running off the map after that many lbs.

Can we maybe get some pics of this beast? Sounds kool as hell.

I like the GT28rs idea, or something else with a ball bearing center section.

yeah the gt28rs is like $1,200 and after 20psi it runs off the map

and the VNT would be cool but im looking for boost in the 20s

I really like the super50 compressor, what could I expect my spoolup to be with stage III or Stage IV in a .48 A/R housing? And how much boost would those allow?
