I bought an '86 2.2L engine with a T1 setup. The guy told me he was running about 9 psi. Two spare heads came with the engine, which told me he had burnt up a couple from running higher amount of boost. If i were to add an intercooler would that help the problem. Also if I were to intercool the setup, would I need to replace the stock pistons and rods?

Or if I'm completely off track, let me know.

Yes, you definitely need to intercool to move up the PSI boost. 2nd it's not the piston, it's the crappy rods and the weak block... It's not a common block. Again, head to the Old Testament for more answers. www.thedodgegarage.com

Well yea this engine isn't gonna be built up to get godly amounts of horsepower. 200 max because this will be my daily driver but also still have enough if i roll up next to some hotshot at a light. If ya know what i mean.

Sounds like me.. here's the hot ticket that tends to work that I was told:

For the level of performance you're after, this is a recipie card; tried and true, works every time it's tried.

- Add intercooler
- Swap to the TII (factory intercooled) ECU
- Up the boost to 14#
- 2.5 or 3" exhaust (you could just do a 2.5" cat back on the cheap)
- Play with timing for optimal results

From there you could port out the factory exhaust manifold. They kinda suck but have room for improvement. A swap from the stock T1 turbo to either an earlier Garret or TII Garret will loose you some instant boost at the low end, but will give you more flow at the midrange on up.

I'm probably missing a thing or two, but this is basically where "Cheap" ends and it's time to start paying for the ride. Ported head will do wonders if done properly (there are about 5 of them on the forum that have confirmed reputations with these heads). Opening up the intake around the injector boss/mounting bolts will have the engine thanking you. Cam swaps won't make that much difference 'till you get into better flow territory, and higher boost.

Hope this helps.

Nate

The guy sent the motor along with a Mopar Performance Computer that he got from Forward Motion, is that the same as the TII ECU. Also with my power goals should i replace the pistons and rods?

take the numbers off the computer or sticker(if avail) and find out what settings you have with it. There are different levels of MP settings. Also if it's T! from pre 88 then it should have two different modules with it. Post pics.... that will save us lots of time and will quickly help. first we have to find oout if it is really a true "early T1" setup or "post T1" setup(aka- intakes, etc). anything would help, but if it's a true totally stock 86 then that leads us down a slightly different road as to how you can IC the thing...

P.S. 200 horses.. stock should be able to handle that, no sweat at all.

It is definately a true stock T1 rebuilt very sloppily and rewired just the same. And i definately think the guy wouldn't put any money where the engine actually needs it.
