I'm looking for some advice on an idea I'm formulating...

I own a 1969 dodge coronet 440 model currently sporting a tired old 318.
I'm looking to build a new engine for it at some point in the future and am thinking of doing a twin-turbo 318. since the car is my daily driver i want to keep the car efficient while having some good power on tap should i need to mash the pedal ( ) or take it to the track once in a while. and besides, who turbos a 318?

given these basic ideas:
318 block likely bored out .030 for a couple of extra cubes, forged bottom end for reliability
i will invest in a set of decent heads (likely edelbrocks)
intake will either be my current weiand stealth dual plane or i will locate something more suitable (advice appreciated)
engine will be carb'd
i will run an intercooler or methanol
i would like to make 500+ hp (yes, i realize that's asking for a lot of volumetric efficiency)

what turbos should i look for? i want to keep this to some sort of a budget as i'm fresh out of college and paying off student loans. therefore, i see a lot of holsets from the CTDs up for sale relatively cheap. would the HX35w's allow me to meet my goals, or are they too small? what do you recommend?

i want to start gathering parts so advice is appreciated on what i should look for.

also, i am a total turbo noob so all advice and constructive criticism is appreciated.

For a 318 I've heard the T3's are a good choice, not sure how a T3/T4 would do probably about the same, I'm not exactly sure how they compare size-wise to the Holsets. There are some Demon carbs on ebay that are already setup for turbo applications: eBay Motors: MIGHTY DEMON 750 BARRY GRANT BLOW THROUGH BLOWER CARB (item 110160375091 end time Jan-13-08 05:45:17 PST)
They also carry other sizes so just look in their store.

Carb Hat:

The Turbo Forums.com

That's the V8 turbo place. Read through the knowledge base and then go through the forums. They have a turbo mopar section, as well as a generic DIY section. Almost everything that applies to ford turbocharging will apply to a 318.

500hp is almost nothing for a turbocharged engine of that size.

a 318 would definatly sport a turbo or 2 quite well, personally i see no reason to twin turbo any motor, except for room. 2 small turbos will make the same power and spooling time as 1 large one (4 cylinders spooling each small one or 8 spooling a large one)

a t3/t4 would be ideal for a single turbo set up, 2 small t3's would do for a twin set up.

i like holsets, because theyre oil cooled only, and available cheap, an hx35 would do nicely, but would loose top end efficenticy (but depending on the amount of boost youre planning, you may not need something bigger), i would ditch the internal gate, and run a large external gate, atleast 50mm would be good, or dual smaller gates, keep it flowing good at full boost

I haven't got my 360 turbo setup done in my arrow but the That link that was posted is about the best forum out there for V8 turbos.

I'm running a single to4b off a ford diesel that a large hot side for flow. I don't want to go to high of boost since still going run the stock smogger pistions. I do have a holley 650 DP setup for boost already.

Yours should be fun car I know my car 2500 lbs with a 360 going to be.

One HX35 might get choked a bit on a 318. It would be fun from light to light though. I'd opt for a pair of HY35's. They would spool plenty quick when you need it and support an easy 700hp. One fellow on the turbofird.org site made 420rwhp with 1 HY35.

turbo wont get choked out with proper wastegating, again, its all about how much boost you want and when you want it

The thing I don't like with a single turbo is wouldn't that place the turbo at the same level with the oil pan and it wouldn't have an easy way to drain oil. With twin turbo each sitting right off the manifold it can easily drain. That's pretty much the one reservation I have about it.

I don't know how much room he will have but I could mount them directly on the manfold on mine so I mounting off to one side. I have moved every thing that was and is in the engine bay to the driverside like all the wiring the alt was moved and over flow bottle and washer jug where relocted so I got nothing on the other side for the turbo heat to wreck.

Here a shot of my engine bay and roughly where I want to put the turbo is the big color blob.
