got my hybrid t3/t4 turbo installed. go the new wastegate actuator with the adjustable rod. what is the purpose of this?

am I right that its only for REDUCING boost? I mean, you are forced to set the rod to a certain specific length if you want the wastegate closed when there is no boost. the geometry of the actuator and the swingvalve sets that. you cant go shorter than that because then the rod wouldnt reach the wastegate lever. if you go longer it REDUCES boost.

correct?

how should I set it?

its really just to set the correct amount of pre-load on the wastegate (about 1/8 inch). other methods (such as a grainger valve) are much more effective for boost control.

i see! hmm .... so how do i set it right? make it too short by 1/8" of an inch before putting it on the rod? so i have to pull the rod to get it on the lever?

Also,in my experience the more pre-load you have on the arm the more boost will spike then back off as the WG starts to open. I like to play with it both ways setting different pre-loads and different settings on the manual boost controller so it will spike to a certain boost level of my liking and then run the desired boost thats is controlled by my MBC. You just need to play with it to get it to your liking but be careful not to put too much pre-load on the arm or the WG will not open at all. Make sense?

hmm..preloading causes spiking. im not sure why that happens intuitively, but i'll take your word for it.

oh yeah, how the heck am i supposed to get that little e clip on and off the swingvalve lever from behind the intake manifold to do all these adjustments?

I use a little safety clip that we use on our racing go-karts. It works very slick,if I remember I will get a pic at my shop tonight. Actually theres one on my Spirit out in the driveway.....

TIIIs are a lot easier to adjust because the intake isnt in the way like on an 8valve but I have used these on my old 8valvers before and you can get your hand back in there to unclip it.
