just curious... my buddy is building his jetta 1.8T wolfsburg. hes got the ko3 on there now and with his programming, exhaust, intake it spikes at about 20 and settles around i think 16-18. he's upgrading to the ko4 turbo and its sitting in his room. it looks TINY! im upgrading my mitsu to the T2 garrett. its a to3 right? how much bigger is the T2 garrett than a ko4 in his VW?
yeah his car smokes mine when im at 12-13 psi. like no chance. im not looking for whats faster or what has what HP, just whats the difference in the wheels and stuff. strictly turbo wise. not performance wise.
take a Omni, then make the engine smaller, then make the turbo smaller, then make the brakes smaller, then make the spring rate lower, then put on smaller wheels and tires, then add weaker struts, then add smaller sway bars, then lastly make the interior slightly smaller. Now you have a VW.

Those turbos are TINY. The T03 is huge compared to the turbo off of a 1.8T. The reason they pull so much harder with less boost has to do with the 5 valves/cylinder and much better induction/exhaust.
Don't just look at physical size between a Garrett T-II and K03 or K04 they are a much more modern turbocharger. Having owned a 2001 Jetta 1.8t K03 150bhp and a 2004 Jetta K03 sport 180bhp they are good little turbo's.
Also, nearly no lag on them. A friend just bought an '08 2.0T GTI. The seat of the pants feel was pretty impressive. Then he proceeded to clean my clock against the Daytona. The 2.0T is 200hp and 207tq, plus it has a LSD stock and a 6 speed. I never expected to beat him, but I didn't realize they were THAT much quicker. Guess it's time for a cal and more boost.
Not sure what turbo is on the 2.0, but it was rather small. Mitsu-sized I'd say. Granted the technology is far newer than ours (left over from the 70s) but a turbo is a turbo and size does indeed matter. The Garrett should have greater power potential than the smaller turbo.

Why don't you tell us how you really feel?
The Omni is a better looking and seemingly more sturdy car than the Rabbits and older Golfs I've come across. But I do like the sleeker look of the Scirocco. If I could squish an Omni down and stretch it out a little, then remove the back doors, that'd be a hot little car.
More similar to srt-4's then TD's (excluding the r/t's).
My roomates stock turbo 2007 2.0 6 speed with its mods would eat just about everyone here up. Its still not fast in my opinion but I know what it would beat.
Its a very nice car. Im not into nice cars but I know its a nice car.
exhaust, cal, FMIC and a cold air intake can put them VW's into the mid 200whp range with ease. Yes those turbos are very small!!! I dont even know if that "upgrade" turbo is as big as a S60????
I beg 2 differ about the everything is smaller....my cuz has the 03 (or is ot 02?) anniversary rabbit edition GTi and im pretty sure it has brembo brakes? thicker sway bars, 18" rims 2 1/2" SS exhaust....basically every single dealer upgrade is stock on his vehicle.
I keep trying to get him to mod it up....altho he only goes racing once a year...how is someone ever going to learn how to launch properly and break out of his mid-high 15s when he is driving a car that is capable of a sub 15.0 or even break into the 14s?!?!
I told him to do those basic mods I mentioned but hes not really intersted..said he has no money...well maybe i should let him take a rip in my car once its finished....that may change his tune
I had an '89 16v (think that was the 1.8) no turbo though, just manual, stock @ 140k miles....that car was sickly quick. I didn't own it when I had a TD though, but I thought it may be able to eeek out a win or at least give them a run for their money. I never got it over 75, but 0-60 on it was incredible, even w/ sloppy bushings in the shifter. I will agree, these cars are finicky. They're nice when they run right, but damn, that doesn't happen a whole lot. THere always seemed to be somethign stupid wrong w/ them.

Wait, are you talking about VW's or TD's? Cause that can be true for both.
The same guy that just bought the new GTI also owns an 82 8v Scirocco that we autocross. It's absurdly slow in a straight line, but with an upgraded suspension it tears up the twisties like a champ. I'm not quite as comfortable beating on it since it isn't my car, but my friend actually pulls in times on par with some of the more autox friendly cars, like Miatas and such. He keeps saying we're going to drop a 2.0 16v motor into it but the machined and prepped engine parts are sitting in the floor of his dad's shop collecting dust. I even offered him an exhaust manifold and a spare Mitsu turbo if he wanted to do some custom turbo'ing on it, but he wouldn't do it. I gotta find less lazy friends.

Hmm......I was wondering if someone would catch that. I meant the VW, but I do agree, the TDs are the same. They just carved out a special niche in my heart, so I let more slide. I also hate how unaccomodating the VWs feel inside. They are NOT cozy, very uninviting and uncomfortable. Thats probably one of my biggest quams w/ them.
