i'm still learning about turbo's etc. what is the benefit to an external wastegate? i see most "fast" cars have them but don't truely understand why. if someone can fill me in i'd appreciate it.

The concept targets the smoothest possible airflow, precise boost control, and general maximum performance... when they are correctly designed and installed. At least in my neck of the woods, most of the ricers on the strret who have external wastegates have ones which are (a) very poorly designed and/or (b) installed in goofy ways. Some of these guys spout off about their "mysterious, unsolvable boost creep" but one quick peek underhood points to the source of the trouble. <snicker>

Corky Bell has a lot to say on the subject.

when your boost goes beyond your set limit and you can't control it , kinda like overboosting but generally at a slower rate.

External wastegates are great for custom applications but aren't cheap and do require you to have more room to work with, which is why the swingvalve works so good for our cars with it's compact design.

Here's what my set-up looks like

Very interesting subject to me, as I'm first now looking into this possibilty for my CSX. I'm trying to learn more about it as well. For an awesome picture of a internal wastegate check this out:

The wastegate is the flapper you see to the right of the turbine outlet.

A good picture of an external wastegate can be seen on Gary Donovan's website. Check under the hybrid turbo section and this link to a turbo set-up showing the way the external gate allows exhaust to bypass the turbine all together.

That said, anybody have prices on external wastegates? I want to know who makes them and what they run.

I like the Turbonetics Deltagate that I have on my mini.Great control..............no creep at 10 psi with a Hybrid turbo

Here is a picture of the 3" downpipe I made with the Deltagate mounted in place.
