ok well im about to give up on this project and sell it off....i have a 88 shelby z daytona 5 spd t-top car that i just put as new head on with a new turbo and ****ed if it wint smoking from behind the turbo....now the old turbo was dumping oil our thru exhaust so.......it has some oil in exhaust from this.....so im unsure as of yet if its the exhaust smoking or the turbo itself........any suggestions would help

i fixed my oil line which i thought was it and seam to get about 5 pounds of boost when revving it during idle.......should this be right or should it go higher? during idle?? i may try taking it out in alley way and seeing what kind of boost it shows when driving it down it but unsure if it will change much....any input???

try valve seals

Mine did that.

I had tons of smoke and checked the turbo.
Sure enough it was worn out.
Overhauled it, put it on, still had way too much smoke.
It never seemed to burn off, like residual oil would do.
It was smoking out the turbo-to-exhaustpipe donut!

I replaced the valve seals. Cheap, but a lot of work.
The old valve seals looked ok, still nice and supple.
After the new ones were in place, the smoke cleared
up completely. No more smoke, even on the first
startup.

yeah but its a new head so they should be perfect.......

oh well anyone else wanna buy this car? im starting to come down to a deadline....its insured so i dont "have" to get rid of it by time i move i can drive it etc just honestly im getting tired of working at it and not having a garage soon is gonna suck so i may just sell the car to whoever makes a good enough offer....but guess we'll c.......

by the way its a 88 shelby z with about 112k on ticker....5 speed and t-tops.....pretty much down to just needing whatever is causing smoke and the drivers floor area taken care of ......has the t2 2.2 freshly rebuilt....has new head newly rebuilt t3 garett turbo.....homebrew intercooler setup with a higher flowing tbird intercooler.....has a bosche porsche bypass valve....all new belts....newer o2 sensor.....straight thru exhaust with dynomax muffler.....52mm t.b.......new plugs....will have new wires hopefully by next monday....and hopefully the i/c installed completely....(still needs finished bolting it in is all...everythings in working order just temporarily tied in place) decent tires....just replaced steering column.....new door bushings.....has newer red paint......overall bodyt besides the drivers floor area is great shape......needs cleaned and waxed but besides this wonderful lookin car....have t-top bags also.....interior needs cleaned pretty badly but i think it will scrub up decently.....needs driver side headlight motor installed but i have it already.....i removed the a/c but have complete setup still.......and an extra alternator...which i assume is good....and a extra starter....and valvecover....

if anyones interested make possible offers thru p.m.
i honestly dont wanna sell it but if right offer comes its gone
money talks lol....
thankx

I just thought of something easy you can try...

To see if it's the turbo leaking again, just check the
turbo's lower, output hose going toward the intercooler.
If you know it was fairly clean and dry when installed,
it could be filled with a pool of old oil if the turbo's still
leaking.

Or, with a little more work...

Knock the exhaust pipe loose and check up in there
with a borescope.

well i kind of thought that if it was leaking that the turbo would push it thru the whole engine am i right??? so i should have seen at least some oil when i was working on my upper i/c pipe last nite if its smoking as bad as it is there should be residue or something right?? and when the pipe blew off yesterday it should have sprayed oil everywhere right? since it was the lower pipe coming right off turbo that blew off....due to being loosely put on by me.....lol.....hopefully its ok....

thankx

brooks

another thing i thought about is my overflow on rad is broke off right now so i wondered if the engine filter isnt sucking in the overflowing rad fluid......and then burnin it out thru

who knows lol

You're right. If your output hose blew off, and if the
turbo was leaking oil, you'd have had an oily mess
blown all over. Also, you should have seen some
oil up top in the upper hose going in the throttle body.

If both these sites are fairly clean and dry the problem
is probably in the motor somewhere.

I'd verify with the head shop that they put in new valve seals.

Just for giggles, it's easy to pull off the valve cover and check
to see if there are actually valve seals there at all! Check
all of them.

If the head shop did this core on a Friday afternoon, or
Monday morning - they could have even forgotten to
put one or more seal on !
