how long do most people here allow the car to idle before shutting engine off, and how long has your turbo lived.

Also do you use synthetic?

I only use synthetic oil in my turbo cars. I let them idle down about a minute before I shut them down.

Agreed, only a minute or so for the watercooled housings (and that might not be needed) ,but I do it out of habit. Now my truck is a different story. At least 4-5 minutes after some heavy use. Synthetic is a must.

I never even remember to. I figure the time it takes me at low speed to get to my parking spot is enough.

I idle down between 30 sec and 1 min. All my turbos have lasted well past 200K. As of yet I have not had to replace one, but I may now have a seal leaking. I believe it is most important to change the oil regularly, every 5000 km. It appears to have worked for me.

My rule of thumb is to park it and let it idle until it heats up to where the fan comes on. After the fan has cooled to the point where it turns off again I shut the engine off.
