Main bearings going =(

SO umm can someone describe how bad main bearings would sound and what kind of side effects to expect?

I heard one could be low oil pressure.... well my oil pressure goes around and stays at the quarter mark.. (kinda low isn't it?) sometimes will go to the half. Sounds like a very light knock but from the crank and i'm losing oil like crazy somewhere. LIke i would fill it and drive up and down a street and about half would be gone. Before it got this bad i thought was just the oil pan gasket but thats alot to lose through that isn't it? I plan to already drop the oil pan this week so anything other than shavings to look for?

main bearings rarely fail. rod bearings are way more likely and will have a bad knock when they fail. now for oil pressure, the stock electric estimation gauge is totally useless. you need to get a get a real mechanical gauge and see what the actual oil pressure is. go to autozone or any parts store and buy a $20 gauge, hook it up under the hood and see what you really have for pressure. do this before you start tearing into the engine.

if your oil pressure is low, then it would be adviseable to just pull the engine and rebuild it. if a rod bearing failed, you must have the crank reground and you must replace the rod that failed. you definitely can't easily replace the crank with the engine in the car.

also it is very common for these engines to knock from excessive clearance on the wrist pins.

hmm So it could just be wrist pin noise... Heres goes somethin

it could be a lot of things. like a knock could be caused by a bad main thrust bearing allowing the crank to bang back and fourth. or maybe you have a bad follower or bad lash adjuster that's making noise misinterpreted as a knock. could be a cracked piston skirt causing the a knock. there's a lot of things it could be. so you need to determine what that thing is causing your concerns
