hello everyone,

Well for 4-5 years now ive lived with the fact that i couldnt make boost faster than i could count but being the lazy person i am i didnt do anything about it as its too much work to take the turbo off...well recently i broke my cam shaft and had to take it off...and what do i find...the waste gate open when its supposed to be closed, i could actually see the opening of the hole with the waste gate "closed".

this is partially my fault for not understanding how turbos worked at the time, had i known id have sent it back along with my F'd up calibration. Also its the person/companies fault for doing some bad QA...i wont give out the name(s) of the parties involved as we all make mistakes and i dont wish to be flamed for bad mouthing a major contributor to the SD community.

But i think im going to have a good friend of mine weld the waste gate shut as i dont ever have it hooked up any way...any advice on the subject?

instead of welding it shut (can you say "overboost"?) ...

how about fixing it, such that it functions as intended ?

you'll never be able to floor the car and wil hit overboost shut down if you weld the wastegate shut.

when i had my stock turbo on the car i couldnt floor it with out monitoring the boost to prevent over boost shut down...im used to not being able to floor it to prevent over boost shut down. plus if i dont want an over boost shut down i can always put my bad calibration in the car which has no over boost shut down

i got 2 against welding the waste gate shut...1 for it being myself...

pending i can find a good job after i get out of school the motor is inline to get rebuilt right after the 4.6l DOHC from my mark 8 which i have yet to determine what type of forced induction i want.

yeah don't weld it shut unless you are running an external wastegate

how much boost do u think these motors are capable of handling...only 20 psi, nope...as a matter of fact i know of a lil 2.5 daytona that ran for 2 years as a daily driver pushing 34 psi...im not saying anyone here dont know anything, just making a point that these engines r tough and will handle a lot

i have my waste gate disconnected from my vac system anyway...the only thing that will ever open my waste gate if i fix it is some extreme exhaust pressure cuz i have my waste gate arm pretty short...

i will look into other methods of fixing my issue but fixing the waste gate arm is looking to be more difficult than most realize...although either way i have to take the exhaust housing off...

ok whats the difference if i shorten my waste gate actuator arm to where it barely makes it to the waste gate arm versus welding it? is that not doing the same thing?

if you weld it shut you cannot control boost, you get max boost that the turbo can make. This is not the safe level that the turbo can make nor is it what your motor can handle. You have to have enough fuel, cool intake temps and enough octane to run lots of boost safely.

couldn't you just add a few washers to space the wastegate actuator out a little to get it to close all the way

Is the puck shaft jammed? If so, have you tried freeing it up with solvent?

What is stopping it from sealing? It must be hitting something or the shaft is binding. The turbine housing doesn't appear to be clean/flat either. Is the puck hanging up on the debris?
