If i put a tiny mark across the turbine and the shaft, can i take the housing and wheel off to change them out for a .63 turbine and housing?
Thanks

if you change the turbo wheel, how are you going to match the marks? you should get it balanced.

It will need to be re-balanced if you want it to last.

You can swap the turbine housing, I assume you are going from a .48 to a .63.

There is no reason to touch the compressor when swapping turbine housing.

On this same subject

I had a whole T2 turbo shipped to me, cross country, should i look into getting it re-balanced??
Packaging was pretty good.

I also had a new center section shipped, in its original packaging, also cross country.
Should i look at getting it rebalanced??

Thanks in advance.

You should be ok, otherwise ship it out to get it balanced, then when you get it back send it out again to get it balanced....

This is probably a dumb question but when i get a .63 housing dont i get a different turbine wheel with that? Do i just change the housing without removing the turbine wheel.THANKS

My understanding is that you can use the housing w/o changing the turbine wheel. But what would the point be? maybe a lag-less turbo? good upper rpm flow? Not sure, but might work good in a 2.5. I'm thinking a proted/polished manifold, ported tii (.48?) housing with 3' swingvalve- 3 in pipe to muffler may give good enough results 350hp possible w/nice FMC. Gary we need your help!

btw

Winston here.

The 2 items were shipped cross country...

...the balance shop is located in town!

Its the impacts during shipping are what concern me, as to if I should look at re-balance to each.
I'll have to check in town, and see about pricing!!

Balancing would be necessary if

a. The wheels were loose and shipped to you--unlikely
b. the shaft got bent during shipping- unlikely but then you need a new turbine.
c. It was not balanced before it was shipped to you.
d.. The same would go for driving the car- I doubt it would get off balance when you hit a bump.

Well its good news for me that, typically its not necessary to re-balance after shipping a turbo unit/cartridge.

For my experiemental turbo (a good T2 unit) I'd like to find a compressor wheel to put on, to go along with a larger AR .60 compresor housing I have (keeping the turbine as is).

So where do I go to start looking at maps & wheels!?!
I have done some preliminary looking at Turbonetics web page, Turbo City, Gary D's site...

After I find an appropriate trim wheel, and finish assembly, I'll be sure to get it re-balanced.

Would there be any performance advantage to just swapping a bigger compressor housing in and not doing the same for the wheel itself?

I do not think that just swapping the compressor housing would work- there might be too much clearance - ie. the compressor wheel is too small for the housing. Youcan swap out the turbine housing with the .63 without swapping the turbine wheel.
