I finally got the intake and exhaust and turbo reassembled to my 2.2 engine (on an engine stand) today. What a pain it was. Everything has to go on in a certain order. Like the intake first, then the exhaust manifold, then the turbo.
Since I went to the 89 and up high rise blow through intake, I had to rotate the turbo compressor housing, and redrill the wastegate actuator mounting holes.
But even with some hammer induced "clearance", the wastegate assembly is a very tight fit against the intake. The actuator rod has less than 1/16" of play, but I guess the good side is that it can't ever come off accidentally.
But the way things ended up, the rod can't come straight out of the actuator can. It has to be side loaded by about 3/8" or 1/2" to get past the intake and to the wastegate arm.
Will this amount of side load have bad effects on the rubber diaphragm in the actuator?
I adjusted the rod length to have a slight (1/2 turn) preload to keep the wastegate closed. Overall, it had to get longer by about 6 turns.
If something has to change, tell me now before I drop the engine in the car tomorrow.
