At a hot, low speed idle(1000 RPM or less) a healthy engine should have 15-18 in/Hg of vacuum. That figure is for street engines, no race or Saturday Night Specials. My engine for example is very, very tired, it has 8-10 in/Hg and misfires like no one's business.

my car alternates between 15 and 20 inches of vacuum at idle =) Because I have a bad vacuum check valve that works sometimes and doesn't other times... I need to replace it!!!!
