Say I am just cruising along at 30 MPH and I quickly floor my van it will take off for a few seconds then it will start to surge. If I press the accelerator slowly or slightly let up after the surging starts, it will then accelerate. What is the cause of this and how can I fix it??

Later this afternoon...

Well I temporarily hooked up my boost guage and it does it as soon as it hits about 9 PSI... it will hold 8 no problem. It just bogs right down. Is this a cut out?
It also seems that I can get up to about 85 MPH which is about 8 PSI then it doesnt want to go no further... this is also roughly at 4400 RPM. Even if I hold the van in gear it will not go over 4400 RPM.

This van is bone stock.

If valve timing is advanced it will also buck and surge at high rpms. With one tooth advance my van would not go over 5300 rpms. It didn't matter what the boost level was.

Well I changed the fuel filter and the gas on the tank side was brown, I turn the filter to where it would go out to the engine and then clean gas would come out. At least the filter was working. It was really hard to blow through also. This tank of gas was what was in the van when I bought it. I am sure it has been sitting in there awhile.
I have just filled it up with some fresh 93 octane high brew. It seems to run better, but havent had a chance to see if it still cuts out.

What is a HEP? I am new to the turbo dodges...

Thanks for the help,
Jeff

I just ran the codes on the van. All it came up with was a code 12 which would go along with the new alternator.

The Hall effect pick up... Thats the black thing inside the distributor with the two wires coming out of it right?

But is it possibly still bad even if it doesnt throw a code for it,? should I replace it anyway?

Installed a HEP in ($50 ) and it runs alot better, but still have the 4000+ sluggishness I cant get over 85 MPH. Time to check the timing on the cam. If I dont have a tension tool I hear I can do it with 3 hands... how tight does the timing belt have to be? Tight like a accessory belt?

Thanks guys, the HEP was bad in my van. Now I am sure the timing is off also.

Thanks Turbulence and 87Shelby.....

I got out there this morning and checked the belt. Sure enough it was one or two tooth off. I timed it right and now it pulls all the way to redline. "thumbs up It even got rid of a horrible vibration when under load!

Only thing I still need to do is dial in the ignition timing. I took the distributor out to verify the timing as per the directions. It looked to me to be a little too advanced, but I can not verify it till I get a timing light, so I just adjusted it best I can by ear.

I was able to do the operation myself using a tent stake to pry on the tensioner to get the belt set while I tightend the tensioner nut. I had to do it a few different times but now its pretty close.

I did loose low end torque on the bottom, but it pulls all the way up now.

Again thanks guys, who knows how long it would have took me to find the problem without your help,

Jeff

On my car it pulls all the way past 6000, but under WOT it will miss and pop out the exhaust. I checked my cam timing as best i could, but i still get Full Rich on my Autometer A/F meter. Would a HEP do this? TPS? Check timing again? (its hard to get the cam perfect with engine in car)
HELP! thanks

What is your ignition timing set at? Joe (Joryn) had the same problem with his 600. He checked his timing and it was set at 15 degrees advance. Backed it down to 12 and he ran a 14.6 in the 1/4.

you guys should check out a local JY before you go and spend all that money on HEP's, they can be had at yards for next to nothing (or nothing if you forget about it in your pocket).. picked up 3 at the yard today with omnious.. also got 3 crabs, a roller cam, door handles, a speed sensor.. all for $46
