84 T1 had major smoking (blue) at idle problem (particularly after hard acceleration). Had turbo replaced with assumedly good used unit. $550 later. Problem appears unchanged. Any chance that it just takes a while to burn off the oil? Garage that did the work did not do a compression check because they said that if it were rings, the plugs would not have looked so good. This is my teenage son's car and I'm getting real tired of pouring money into it. The garage also replaced his O2 sensor, but they used a unit made by Kem (sp?) anyone ever heard of this company or know if the sensor is likely to be acceptable? Thanks

Yes, but a while is defined as minutes, and certainly not more than 1 hr driving.

Does it do it while under boost? If not, probably valve guide seals.

Car was driven for 5 minutes and idled for 15 minutes. Car does not smoke while boosting or under acceleration at all. Oh please tell me that the head doesn't have to come off again.

Quite possibly the valve guide seals.

The head doesn't have to come off to change 'em. Just remove valve cover and cam, set one cylinder to TDC at a time, compress valve spring, remove retainers, change seal, reinstall sping and retainters. Repeat for all 8 valves.

Some people have asserted that bad valve seals will only show smoke at start-up. Is that an accurate statement? The mechanic also noted that although the PCV valve is new, the elbow between the pcv and valve cover is cracked. Is this in any way relevant? The small triangular filters in the air filter housing are totally oil soaked.

Nope. Oil will leak past the seals under vacuum (cruise, but especially engine breaking and idle). They will not smoke while under boost, though, as the boost pressure pushed the oil up, back into the head.

Doubt it. 9 out of 10 ChryCo turbo cars have a cracked PCV elbow.

That's normal. Oil gets blown into the filter box for the PCV system when under boost.

Check that PCV! if the engine has blowby, the PCV may not be big enough to vent it all! under boost it would force oil into the cylinders and out the exhaust!

Take out the PCV, put a rag over the end of the hose and go around the block see what happens!

Sure appreciate all the input. Realized smoke was not the blue it had been, now it was black. Checked vac lines and found map sensor and fuel regulator lines were disconnected. Don't ya love it when ya pay a garage a bunch of money and they do sloppy work? No more smoke. Car runs fairly well, but only getting 6 PSI (MP puter and wastegate vac line off). Found knock sensor is busted and the six way connector to the TPS is missing one of the male ends. If I can find a new six way for an 84, do I have to cut all the wires to the connector and solder them or can they be removed from the old connector and reattached to the new one?
