Actually, the Garrett turbo that is used stock on the TD's is a T3 Garrett Turbo with a Chrysler flange. It is the same main cartridge as the Grand National and the Ford Turbo Coupe's. The difference between them is the A/R sizes of the turbine and compressor housings/wheels. If you have a stock looking turbo on the car, and it is a garrett, then it would be a T3 TURBO (not engine). And it probably came off of a normal T2 engine.
The best way to check a turbo is to remove the intake line going to the filter and see how much play the compressor wheel has in it. If you can really move the wheel, then it needs to be replaced. If you can move it maybe a millimeter left and right, and can't move it in and out, then I would say it is good to run. If the turbo needs replaced, you can get a rebuild for it, which all you would need is a T3 rebuild kit, and you can get them just about anywhere.
