Well, that's about what noise my CSX-T started making tonight, only under acceleration, accompanied by an utter lack of boost. I think it's safe to say the turbo went bye-bye. I just hope nothing was ingested by the engine. I know there's a butt ton of Mitsu's at the local yard, but I'd just as soon go to a Garret. So. . .

I have a freshly rebuilt 86 Garret that I could convert, but being a poor college student, I'd like to make my own adapter if possible. What size pipe would I need for the inlet. Or does anyone have an adapter they'd swap for a polished valve cover?

Next, has anyone ever successfully swapped turbos on a late TI/TII without pulling the head?

i've got an adapter that i bought from gary i'm not using right now. but he sells them for 20 or 30 bucks and rumor has it that valve covers go for about 60+ if they're polished real nice. you'd be better off selling it and buying one OR just get an appropriate sized washer, a piece of metal pipe (both very available at your local hardware store) and get them welded together cheap. drill holes and voila, you're own adapter!!!

Yeah, I can weld one my self, but didn't know what size stuff or where to get it. I'd have already ordered from relentless ($25), but they're closed until the 29th, and I'd rather not wait if at all possible. Between work and school, I kinda need a car, and I'm not trusting the Daytona right now. Wanna sell yours for his price and you can buy a new one when he opens up again?
