Guys,

Need your advice on running a safe PSI without a BOV. I converted my TD to intercooled and upgraded the computer to run 15psi. The cars pulls hard, but the turbo lags when I shift. I have a BOV and pipe on order. Am i causing damage to the Compressor wheel at that Psi without a bov?

Used without a BOV, you will inevitably do thrust damage to your turbo , sooner or later, from surging the compressor, and yeah, your turbo will have to spool again after each shift(or sudden throttle closing)...that being said I m,anaged to run my 250,000 km used T2 turbo for over 2 years with no BOV-mind you it was only driven 5-10K kms per year...I don't suggest anybody else do it though....but I now have a Talon BOV, and it is alot nicer, and quicker to boot (less lag between shifts)

I'll be running mine for a little while that way, but then again I have an auto, so it will rarely if ever snap the throttle closed under full boost.

None of the factory TII cars (12 psi) had a BOV and neither did the S60 development car (18 psi). In general its nice to have and can't hurt and may extend the life of the turbo at higher boost levels.

Chrysler installed them on the TI and auto applications for noise control. The mitus can really move a lot of air at low engine speeds and you will get a lot of compressor stack if there is no BOV.

If you get the chance drive a TI car with a BOV and unplug it, then go into a decel condition. Even with the factory airbox they make an amazing amount of noise.
