Hey all. I just bought an 85 dodge daytona turbo z for 200 dollars and I don't know what is wrong with the turbo in it. I really don't know a whole lot about cars givin the fact that i am only 16. but If someone could help me I would appreciate it. I can floor the car and it won't do anything dramatic. I can only top it out at around 85 and the turbo guage doesn't even move at all. so if someone could give me some advice. I'd really appreciate it.

First of... I can help you...

When you floor it, does poofs of black soot come out of the exhaust?

check the vac line to the boost gauge. also to check to see if the turbo moves freely take the airbox out and plumbing also then put your fingers in the intake side of the turbo and try to turn the compressor wheel.also check for shaft play (updown, left, right) there should be a little play( for bearing clearences) almost none

The 85 Turbo has a larger EGR housing on the compressor inlet that makes it difficult to chekc for shaft play.

The first thing I would look at is the wastegate actuator rod, it's not unusual for the clip that holds it on to rust and let the arm pop off. The wastegate is what controls the exhaust flow through the turbo and the boost output. Look at the backside of the engine and towards the right will be a round metal can with a rod about 6" long sticking out of it. The can wll also have a vacuum line connected to it. Follow the rod and it should fit over a post on a little arm that sticks up out of the back of the turbo. If the arm is off, reinstall it and see if your problem is solved.

Another vote for the wastegate actuator rod, he's probably only getting 2-3 PSI boost thus the lack of power.

Thats why I asked about the soot silly It would be in open loop at WOT, adding a poopload of fuel, causing lil black toots of smoke out the exhaust.

I had an 85 Z before too. My act. rod actually rusted out the end. The clip was still there though.

Umm, no. The ECU only adds fuel to the boost it sees VIA the baro selenoid and MAP sensor. Also the fuel pressure regulator only adds fuel if there's more boost.
