Ok, here's the story. A bunch of guys standing around a gas station parking lot bsing about cars. I was talking about the Daytona and mentioning what my plans are. One of my buddies is a diesel nut, and I happened to mention that there is some interest in running Holset turbos on our cars. He took off and came back with a nice HX-35 and quoted me a price I couldn't refuse. Now, my question is what do I do with the thing? I mean it looks great on my coffee table and I know I could probably Ebay it for 4x what I have in it, but I'd really like to try to make it work first. My main concern is spoolup on an 8v 2.5. I do have a nitrous works wet kit I could "borrow" from the Camaro to help out a bit.
What I'm mainly wondering about is any changes I should make to the turbo itself such as swapping housings, etc to aid spoolup. Maybe just a "Holset Turbos for Dummies" guide from some of you guys that know a bit about them.
Thanks,
Tony

I know the HX35 on my truck can push 35 psi easy, but I don't know what you'd have to do with the 2.5 to get it to spool up. An HY9 from a newer 24 valve Cummins would be easier to spool up than the 12cm housing HX35.
As far as mounting it, I don't have a clue. I'm still looking forward to upgrading to a Garrett from the Mitsu.

I had a Holset that came off of one of the newer 24V Cummins engines. I thought even my TIII was not big enough to spool that thing. Ended up selling it on Ebay to some guy who was wanting to turbocharge his Ford 300 Big Six and used the money I got from the Turbo to buy the T3-T4 Hybrid on my TIII now.

I have an older H1c I am using on a hybrid conversion when I get the motor done. Get the 12cm housing. If you have a stock head, you may run into alot of lag. If you have a good ported head, then "maybe". With the 8v head, you may want the HY35 as stated earlier since it will spool up quicker. If the 2.3 8v headed ford guys are using them, we should have similar results. You will need a custom manifold as it will have to sit lower since the intake is on the same side. It should support 400-500 hp with the turbo you have now. 300-400 with the HY35.

Actually I did nothing wrong. I was given a barely used Turbo and I sold it on ebay. With what I made off that Turbo paid for my T3/T4 Hybrid, external wastegate and part of my Spearco intercooler.

If you have to make a custom manifold anyways, why not put a hybrid DOHC head onto there and really be able to take advantage of a monster turbo. That's what I'd do.

Where would I find a 12 cm housing? Would that be a bolt-on without changing the wheel? Thanks everybody for all the help and suggestions!

Well, it's strange I know, but I'd really like to see what I can get out of the 8v setup first. Plus I have a pretty short attention span, and I'm half afraid that if I take on a hybrid project, I'll lose interest before I get it finished.

You probably already have the 12cm exhaust housing. 94-98 12 valves and some of the 24 valves came with the HX35 12cm exhaust housing. The wheel doesn't need removed to change the exhaust housing. Most the Cummins guys like to upgrade to a 14 or 16cm housing, so if you don't have a 12 it should be easy to find one.

I'm pretty sure this turbo came off of a 24v truck. Supposedly 2000 or newer.
The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning toward following shadow16v's advice. These things are selling pretty high on ebay, and a s-60 or s-70 might be better suited to a daily driver that sees limited track time. I know I'll be happier on the street with something that has a broader powerband.
Thanks,
Tony

Does the HX35 have a specific part # cast onto the turbocharger itself to look for and identify it by? I've been thinking about getting one of these for a 2.5 hybrid motor I'm in the process of building and want to keep an eye out for one.
Thanks,
