ok, here is the scenareo.
ive got some extra parts left over from my last project and went to mess with turbocharging.
here the last project, a 90 dakota http://www.ccr4x4.com/album/Members/Owen/owen.JPG
and i have a perfectly good 3.9 v6 in the corner of my shop thats begging to go into a dune buggy of some sort.
so since i know nothing about turbos, i'd hope you all can educate me. i was thinking a turbo off a 80's dodge 2.2 would work, but from the few posts ive looked at it seems that there are allot of different types out there.
what all should i pillage from the junkyard guys and gilrs?

What kind of performance are you looking for? Low end torque or mid-range and upper end power?

If you like low end torque and don't need a lot of top end power, then two Mitsubishi TE04H's from 88+ TI turbos. Just one is really small for a 2.5L motor. They make for a halvway decent turbo for the 2.2L motor, but are still lacking the top end flow. But two on a motor under 4L may be a good choice.

If you are looking for the mid-range and upper rpm power, then the Pre-88 TI or TII turbos will work well. They both have the same compressor wheel, from what I've read.

However, if you are only looking to add just one turbo to the motor, then you've got your eyes on the wrong turbos. Even a S60 will be too small. You'll need to start looking at the Garrett T4 or T3/T4 hybrid turbos to match the displacement of the motor. A decent quickspooling single turbo could be a T3/T4 hybrid with a .63A/R turbine housing mated to a T04E compressor with a 46 or 50 trim compressor wheel. There are many other persons here on the list that are more knowedgable on this subject, but these are at least a starting point.

well i'm not to sure of what exactly i want, that engine was pretty peppy stock, but my idea is to make a light weight go fast toy that i'll have about $500 into. so twin turbos would be an option. that 3.9 redlined at 4500rpm, so i proably wont be reving past 5500rpm with twin turbos I'd like more power in my 2500+rpm band. so what do you figure?

if you go twins, I'd stick with the Mitsy TE04H's for the quick spoolup on that motor. Since you don't have a high redline, that's a good feature. This is my opinion on the setup.

Any 88+ Turbo 1 car. http://www.turbododge.com/forums/sho...12&postcount=3
The smaller turbo of the two there is the TE04E. There also is some info at. http://www.thedodgegarage.com/turbo_turbo.html I hope that helps.

I wouldnt waste the time turboing a 3.9 V6. I had one in my 90 Dakota Sport convertible and I dumped it out after the previous owner said it was stalling around corners and then spent almost $4000 trying to track down the problem. They are lacking in power and durablility.
I dumped a Dakota R/T driveline including front and rear suspension into the truck, but if that wouldnt have come along the truck wouldve become a 2.2/2.5 Turbo Dakota convertible .

3.9 is a damn good engine. Ive owned my Dakota(Mark III) since 60k miles and it now has over 160k miles on it without a single problem and those were abused miles too. My brothers 3.9 kota has been going forever also. As for lacking in performance, the old 3.9s are dogs, but my truck with the magnum 3.9 and the stock muffler replaced with a flowmaster would turn 16.3 all day, no race truck but it was a snappy truck. I been very seriously considering turboing mine also.

The 3.9's are good after lets say 1994. Before that they are lumps. Thats what I was meaning. I drove my truck a couple times and it was a slow beast. and the First Gen dakota's are not heavy trucks!
