my question is simple, on the turbine side of the turbo is that "piston ring" looking ring the only thing that keeps oil from mixing in the exhaust flow? (provided no drain blockage) also how about compressor side seals?

yes, the piston ring is what prevents oil from going out the turbine side.
the compressor side should use a carbon seal, which is composed of many pieces, a spring, washers, spacers and a chunk of carbon.

Exactly, unless you have one of those oddball dynamically sealed compressors In that case, it'll have a piston ring type seal on the compressor side as well.
