How to tell if a turbo is bad

Lets say you've got a turbo that has no shaft play at all. Is there a way to test to see if anything else is wrong with the turbo? (Seals, etc.)

Maybe if you have some blue smoke coming out the exhaust.

Unless you have a test stand, no, I don't believe so. You can send it out, to a place that has a test stand. They will mount it up, run pressurized oil through it, and spin it X# of rpms to make sure seals are good and all is well with it. I'm not sure how much this would cost you.
