Ok heres the story i have a 88dodge daytona 2.2L turbo 1 and i recently took the BOV out of the airbox and seeled off the holes in the airbox with some bolts and lock nuts. somehow one of the bolts came loose and got sucked in . when it first happened i had no boost at all i thought for sure the turbo was junk. i was driving home and had the pedal down pretty good to get up to speed then the turbo kicked back in. the only thing now is that it doen'st seem to have as much pep as it used to and the spool up is a little slower and it also whistles when i'm boosting. so the question is IS MY TURBO JUNK if so i will prob dump the mitsu and go for the garrett in the summer.

bolt into the compressor at 100K plus rpm's....you should be happy the wheel didnt desintigrate and send shards into the engine....pull the turbo intake tube off and see what the blades look like....at the least you will probably need a new compressor housing and wheel....but from the sounds of it. you are like me...just looking for a good reason to put on a garret...

You now have one....

I agree with lebaron guy. Check the fins on the compressor wheel. Sounds like it's a good time to start modding the car

how big is the 'bolt' or screw?

if the bolt makes it past the turbo, you could ruin more than the turbo!!!

you HAVE to get that bolt back, one way or another. If it goes through the engine, it could do major damage - a friend of mine had an accelerator pump check-ball get sucked into his engine, and was lucky, when they tried to put the engine at TDC (after running it) it wouldn't quite turn over - removed the head, and there was the ball bearing!

If that bolt is in the engine, or goes through it, you could have major issues!

If the turbo changed behavior/sound, there is a problem there too! You gotta get that bolt back, pull the turbo/manifolds/etc until you find it...

Agreed... that is your soul mission now. Find the bolt. You probably lodged it in there, then it came loose because of forces being exerted thru the exhaust side of the turbo. Even if the fins dont look bad, you might have damaged the center section. Besure to check shaft play, etc.

Thanks guys i was looking for a good reason to get that garrett but as far as the bolt goes it's been in there for a couple weeks and i would assume that it would have gotten in the engine by now but i will check on wednesday when i get home from college since i don't have to work and check everything out. the bolt was a 5/16 or 3/8 by 2" or so, so it's not too small to fit easily through everything into the engine i hope. but will check wednesday and give you all an update now i just gotta find a garrett and all things needed to convert to one for the summer.

I sure hope it didn't get inside anything - could have lodged a valve, stuck in the intake (its a blowthru I assume), stuck against an injector, lots of things - just dont drive it or start it until you get it back! lol.

To upgrade to the garrett, just find yourself a T2 garrett, it'll bolt right up unless you have a 2.5" DP, in which case you'll need to drill the flange a bit to get the bolts thru.

All your other parts will work, but be sure you get a BOV - the mitsu might be junk and not worth replacing with another, but the garrett is worth keeping no need for compressor surge to kill it.

good news, i got the bolt out it was right inside the turbo where the big hose goes in and got it out. i took a pic of inside with my phone and everything is in good shape and no more worries about bolts in the engine. check shaft play and it is minmal and the wheel moves easily so i am happy.........but still gonna go for the garrett in the summer

unless you intercool it you probably will not be too impressed with the stock garrett. The mitsu spools quicker and can easily make 14 psi. I noticed a performance drop on my 88 daytona when I switched until I added the intercooler.

So if you are going to intercool it go with the garrett if all you are going to do is just raise the boost with a g-valve to 14.7ish(the stock computer/map limit)
then I'd say save your money. Buy a 2.5" exhaust, g-valve, and A/F gauge($200) as opposed to a garrett($450 w/o core).

you lucky SOB - lol. guess the whistle came from air going past the bolt, but that dont explain where your boost went for a while...
