Balancing turbo on rebuild.

My Ride: 87 Shelby daytona T2
Engine: 2.5 bored 0.20
Induct: Turbo
1/4: 13.785

If rebuilding a turbo most people say to balance it. Would this simply require the shaft with the compressor and turbine wheel attached (would look like a little dumbell almost) to be taken to a turbo shop to get them to balance it. Then simply mark the positions of the wheels and nuts and reassemble the shaft and wheels in the center section? Thanks.

Take them the whole unit, they much prefer it that way, and yes ALL newly rebuilt turbos must be balanced!

What do you mean by whole unit? The whole centre section (basically the whole turbo less the turbine and exhaust housings)?

Re-balancing is not required if the parts have already been balanced (They have if they are used).

Correct, but having the entire fully assembled turbo allows the tech to forsee any other problems. However the shaft with both wheels whether new or not must be balanced as a single unit.

One more question. If the turbo is fully assembled how would he adjust the balance if the turbo was not in balance?

They will remove the housings or just give them to the tech (preferable) Most balancers use just the center cartridge and wheels. They grind material off the wheels to balance them, however having the housings allows them to see if there is any flow diversion after having removed the material, especially on the compressor side.
