new at this. bought 88 daytona a/t cheap. had bad mitsu turbo, replaced with older unit from a daytona T3 i believe. only getting 4lbs. long story with this car its had several people under hood. not sure if 2.2 or 2.5 has log intake. under hood decal has 2.5 but who knows. i don't know much about these engines. vac lines were all messed up. replaced them all using TII diagram. had to mount mitsu w/g can because the other hit intake. could it be this can? any help appreciated.

The mitsu WG can should not work without some fabrication. It could be your can. You might want to disconnect the vac line to it to see if the can is the problem. Watch out though, as bost will come on very quickly, anc could cause quite the problem. If it is not the can then it is a vac problem most likly. I assume that the boost was fine before the swap?

Sounds like the motor was peiced together. The 2.5L TI came out in 1989, so if they swapped it in they also got the intake from somewhere else as the 2.5L TI had a newer style aluminum intake not the log.

The wastegate must be getting forced opened when your in boost. Try moving it a bit with a shim or something to keep the wastegate shut. You should have to pull the wastegate actuator arm about 1/4" to slip it on the post.

yes i fabbed the mitsu can to fit. even added a spring to see if this would help, but at the same time also did a few other things to tune up engine. gained almost a pound. what can should i look for as the one that is for this turbo not only hits the intake but is bad. the ring that holds the mitsu turbo together was missing and wiped out the turbine. the turbo i put on it was a junkyard turbo that i fit to an 88 pontiac lemans and put out plenty of boost on the 1.6 engine. if i could find a good mitsu to put back on i would. i was wrong about the intake, it is a one peice with throtle body pointing forward. i found an 88 shelby z sitting in a local junk yard complete. is there anything i should look for on this car that i would need. intercooler, computer? i bought the wheels already. beyond that basically the same car inside and out.

I'd snag the turbo off that shelby Z and install it, this way you will have a proper turbo for your car. 87-88 T2 cars got whats called the ''small'' wastegate can, but it can hold up to about 14 PSI plus even more if you shim it. 89 T2 cars got the large wastegate can, this is the most desired but not necessary for you at the moment. Your downpipe will bolt right up onto that turbo from the shelby Z, that is unless you modified it for this current turbo you are running.

Where are you located in PA?

unhooked line to can. plenty of boost now. so the problem is not the can? this would have to be from my vac source. i have a hole tapped on the outlet of the turbo should i hook the can up there? this is were it was connected on the lemans setup and it worked fine.

Just get a manual boost controller and be done with it. Trust me it's the best $15 you'll ever spend. Find the cheapest one you can on ebay (they all work the same) and remember to take into account shipping costs too. I paid $15 shipped for mine.

I agree. The only way to beat that is if you have a few parts lying around, and a couple of taps to make a g-valve yourself. I would run a line off od the nipple you speak of to the MBC, and then the WG. It works grea for me.

thanks for the help. the shelby z in the scrap yard has the i/c and plumbing still in tact.is it worth getting? i assume i'd have to get the rad also. the yard owner says the motor sounds good just smokes bad. 78k on it has to be the seals in the turbo. he told me i could get it for $100 if i prep it for the pull.

$100 for a rad/IC combo in good shape is a good deal.

Turbo seals are probably blown, that or the valves seals are gone.
