i have an 86 turbo Z i believe it's a first generation turbo because it doesn't have an intercooler. i need to find another turbo. the seals indide the turbo are worn out from the way it's acting it's the only thing that i can figure out. i've looked at 2 other turbo z's but they all have the same problem. can i convert to a second generation turbo set up or should i just try to find another T1?

Yes. Checkout www.thedodgegarage.com under "turbo Database" for info on converting from early T1 to T2..
As for fixing that turbo, check out www.******************** They can rebuild your turbo fairly cheap.

They list the parts you need on TheDodgeGarage. If you can't find them at a junkyard, they're on Ebay from time to time. Or post a message in the parts wanted section here.. Off the top of my head, you need a GLHS logic module. 1 piece intake manifold with fuel rail, throttlebody, and sensors. Fuel injectors. Some kind of intercooler (bigger the better, but stock will work) and a blow off valve.. Pop the head off the engine to change the turbo, and you can change the intake manifold while it's off.

i have the head off right now, but that's about as far as i've gotten, i was told not to run it due to the unbelievable amount of squeeling the turbo was making. so my 84 Rampage has been getting beaten back and forth to work when my Turismo won't start (it has 325,000miles on it!!!) have intercooler from a mitsu starion, will it work?

I know that guys have run those coolers, but I dont know much about them. If the wheels are OK on your trubo(s) you might check out turbocity.com. They have rebuild kits for around 100.00, but then you would have to find a place to get it balanced. If you dont feel up to the task, then definatly give TU a call.

What is wrong with the turbos anyway?

i think the seals are out of them the car smokes really bad when it first gets into boost range. when i say bad i mean covers both lanes of the highway with smoke. and there is a squeel that just doesn't sound right when it's under boost.

That squeal is proably the compressor wheel machining itself on the comp housing. I heard the same sound coming from my TII before it started making the smoke screen behind me.

I have an early TI turbo sitting in the garage that's about as good as a used turbo gets. Where is Mahaffey? I'm in Ickesburg, about 45 miles NW of HBG. I installed a Conquest/Starian intercooler in an '89 2.5 TI Daytona and loved the results. The trick is intercooling the older TIs with the log intake.

mahaffey is about 2 1/2 hours northwest of pittsburgh. i'm actually thinking about selling it and the 89 non turbo daytona that i've got sitting at the house in the way of other projects that need to get done. wound up buying a neon and it gets waaaaaayyyyyy better gas mileage than my daytona could even dream of getting.
