No, this isn't true and it came up when I was developing the windage tray patterns. The late CB pans had slightly more access room on the flywheel end -- presumably to make servicing easier.

Even if you had the pans side by side you might not see this. I run into this stuff all the time (or am told about it).

I am working on windage control for the Toyota 2zz at present (Shhhh). They moved the pickup tube over from the 1zz by 1.5mm. Hot performance tip: Use the 1zz pan and get out the die grinder.

The depth and pickup point location appears to be the same in the 2.2/2.5 series. Many different pickups were used, of course. With the balance shaft versions there is much more of the pan hanging down there waiting to be hit. This is one reason I like the internal reinforcement (tar layer with sheet metal cover) for sound control. Makes'em very tough. Many people like to remove the tar and plates because they collect detritus, errr... I mean crap.
