I am removing the balance shafts from my 2.5L common-block. I though I read somewhere that it was a "mod" to use the 2.2L pan and pickup. What, if any, is the advantage to this?

The advantage is that the "2.2" pan (the ones with out balance shafts) are shaped to send oil towards the pick-up as opposed to the flat bottom "2.5" pans. The balance shaft assembly takes up room in the pan and keeps your 4 quarts near the pick up. When you remove the balance shaft assembly the oil has all that new room to move around. The problem is when you turn there is nothing to keep the oil near the pick up.

You missed one important point, the 2.2 oil pan is shallower. If you want a used one, get one out of an 89 and up Omni, they never had BS's.

Arn't all CB 2.2L pans and pickups the same? I've found someone on this forum who has a 2.2L pan and pickup, I don't know what from, they should both bold right up to the existing pan and block right?

No, not all CB 2.2L pan are the same. Some 2.2L came with balance shaft, some 2.2L didn't.

So, to sum up: CB pan and pick up with balance shaft are all the same; CB pan and pick up with NO balance shaft are all the same.

How about an 89 Daytona Shelby? That wouldn't have BS would it?

I got one of my CB 2.2 oil pans off a 89+ shadow TBI, works good or you still can go to the dealer and by a new pan and pick up, the last one I got from the dealer was about $90, and the pick up was $15.

all 2.5's (n/a and turbo) and TIII motors came with the deep pan and balance shafts. if you remove the balance shafts, you can run an extra quart of oil or install a regular common block 2.2 oil pan, pickup and dip stick. i would go the second route because the deep oil pan is more vulnerable to damage from road obstacles, etc.

I heard that the reason they were finally generally installed on the FWD engines (2.2) was because of incidents on the assembly line -- some people trying to install balance shaft assemblies on blocks not machined for them and related fun.

Shhhhh.....
