At the transmission side. Where the head meet the block, just under the head gasket on the block. You may be have remove the air box bracket to read the vin.

Just post it here.

for 1989 and newer engines, the block numbers are all "common"ly the same. I'm looking at a 1989 2.2 TBI and a 1991 2.5 turbo both have the same block numbers. the oil pan is a definite giveway as to what motor is what. the cranks are what is different so look at the crank. a 2.5 is marked "2.5"

If you dont have it apart yet and you want to know what it is you can measure the piston travel through the spark plug hole by rotating the engine and putting a coat hanger or a metal rod of some type and measure the stroke, 2.5 will be about 4.09 inch and 2.2 will be 3.62

the only difference between a 2.2 and 2.5 is the crank ? All other engine parts will swap out on the common blocks?

I guess I never noticed a difference in the oil pans. I assume one is a little deeper being that the 2.5's had balance shafts and the 89 T2 2.2 did not have balance shafts. Could you give a little more info on that? What about T3 oil pans? I have one of those too laying around. The crank will tell you for sure, but I need to look at these pans on common blocks now. I know when I removed my balance shafts from my 2.5 I used my pick up and pan from my
T2.

The 2.2 and 2.5 use the same rods, but crank and pistons are different between the two motors.

the 2.2 pans look like they have a coffee can sticking out the bottom in the center... the 2.5 pans are as deep as that coffe can sized imprint... but are flat accross the bottom

2.2 |-g-| ............ 2.5 |___|

if you can understand my lil diagram LOL

From what I can see the T3 pan and 2.5 pan are the same. They have that flat spot?
The T3 pan I have was from a pilot car so it might be different.

I believe all TIII motors came with balance shafts, that would be why they went with the deeper 2.5 pan

if you don't think it's the original motor first thing i'd look and see if it is a common block. just see if it has a fuel pump block off plate if not it's a common block. it should be right next to the oil filter. also like every one says the oil pan. also you can tell buy the water pump. if the back side of the belt drives it it's 89 late.
