How about using a 90 degree thermostat housing on the transmission side of the head for a #4 cooling mod, block off the normal thermostat housing, and using a 90 degree thermostat housing on the block with a temperature sensor bung?

Here's one for a Ford from Jeg's:

If you have an electric fan, and an intercooler in front of your radiator, you do not need a thermostat. If the fan isn't on, you're only losing a small amount of heat though actual radiation. We've been running reverse flow for a few years, and the car doesn't take any longer to heat up.

All of the pressure in a cooling system is caused by heat expansion. The design of every TD water pump(and most likely any W/P) make it impossible to create positive pressure. All the W/P is for , is to push the coolant through everything.

The #4 coolant mod is obsolete if you reverse flow.

You don't need to be able to machine aluminum, just be able to weld it. Our first block bung was a scrapyard elbow welded to a piece of aluminum plate, surfaced with a file and a belt sander.

The pump he's running is an water to air I/C pump off of a Ford Lightning. Just about any small electric pump will work. The first setup we ran was a $100 12V "Pony Pump" from Princess Auto. We didn't even get the viton impeller for it, so after a few months all the vanes fell off.

While we're waiting for pic's ... why not write about your set-up. It sounds interesting.

alright, alright....
heres some pics
the pump is rigged up temporarily with wire, so dont be too critical =)
the rest is pretty self explanitory with the pics.
hot comes out of the block, to the top of the rad, then to the bottom of the rad to the pump, out of the pump then to the head and so on. also, heres a pic of the motor so you can see what im working with.
hope this works

i have a 2000cfm slim fan on order and ill need to make a shroud for it when it comes
and one its in i should be able to pound on this thing with no problems, better cooling on higher boost and less octane.

Nice looking engine compartment! You put a lot of work into it. I like the intake. Where did you put the battery?

The cooling system we're running consists of a similar electric pump running to the water outlet(now inlet) on the head, exiting the block, running to an audi rad with the inlet and outlet on the same side. 14" electric fan with a properly designed shroud which is sealed to the radiator. The w/p runs all the time, the fan comes on at 190 deg and shuts off at 160 deg. It's not fancy

Interesting, I've never had a problem keeping the ol 2.2 cool, but interesting none the less! Keep it up!

It's not an issue of keeping it cool. The head likes to be cold. Makes more power, keeps detonation away etc. And the rings like to be warm 180+. So by shoving the coolant in through the head 1st you have the head colder than the rings.

I get that, but I haven't had a problem making power or detonating either. So like I said.....interesting!

OK ... but I have a couple questions.
What effect(s) on the turbo and heater core?
Since GM did this on the LT ... and the heads were designed for this as far as the passages go ... do you have enough flow (through the stock head) to satisfy the block needs?
Did we consider a gasket mod to increase flow .. or is this moot?
