I'd really rather use one of the blocks I have instead of starting over with a common block, so here's the setup I'm planning to run. (planning to spend under $1000 and my blocks are '88s)

Bored 0.020
Stronger pre-85 connecting rods
New cast Mahles
Stock cast crank
Billet main caps (probably MP)
Arp rod/main/head studs

Would my block benefit signifigantly from billet steel main caps?

I'll be running 18lbs if I still have my mitsu, but I don't ever plan on going over 20.

Forged pistons aren't in my price range right now, but next summer I'll probably make the switch to the common block and buy them then.

Any suggestions?

Wouldnt worry about the caps or ARP main studs. From what Ive seen the bottoms on these 2.2's are stout.Just make sure and have the rods resized.
