Anyone using a chrome top ring, instead of the universal chrome-moly? I understand the bore needs to be set *rougher* and ring gaps may need to be set bigger, but it looks to be a good deal for turbo and nitrous applications.....better than the chrome moly according to a famous engine building shop, and a big name piston and ring manufacturer engineer.

Just starvin for input....

BTW, if you Hasting part # has a M in the beginning, it's Chrome-Moly, if it has a C it's just Chrome

From what I have seen the chrome ring will take more heat and last longer but is hard on cylinder walls . The molly rings break in quicker but I have seen the moly break out of the ring under any type of detonation and there goes your ring seal. The best ring I have seen would be a hardened ductile ring , Its very flexable and takes extreem heat and detonation . All the big name guys running turbos , nitrous and blowers are running a hardened ductile ring. Hope this helps!!!!!!

They are probably available. Most of what is available isn't advertised...you'll just have to make some calls.....

After doing some reasearch via internet and on the phone, this is what I've found out:

Hastings makes the 2M 4026 rings for our cars (2.5L turbo). This is a Plasma-Moly top ring (also known as Chrome-Moly because of the impregnated chrome in the Plasma-Moly) that starts first with Ductile Iron, then it is Plasma-Moly coated.

2nd ring is Ductile Iron as well.

Hastings does not make a 2C 4026 ring for our bores. This would be chrome, but it doesn't exist.

Since the top and 2nd rings start with ductile iron first, they are supposedly the best we can get for high boost/high heat applications.

All the above information is directly from a Hastings Cheif Engineer.

I told him my engine spec's (3.460" bore, Forged pistons, 25psi boost, 355 wheel hp, and 388 wheel torque). He suggested running a top ring gap of .028" and a 2nd ring gap of .025". Right were my machinist also recommended (.027" and .025").

Hey James

Now that you've run the car/engine, how is your set up working.

The reason I ask is that I am currently about to do assembly of fresh machined 2.5 with Venoila .030" pistons, etc.

I'm wondering what set-up, *pistons rings*, *ring gaps*, etc. you ultimatley have gone with??

Have you encountered any problems??

Thanks in advance
Jeremy
