I've known for a while that the 89 CSX's motors were either a TII block or a common block. I had previously thought that all 500 were equipped with a TII block, this is what I've always though I had. Well, while replacing my tranny, I was told how to identify my block as either an 87-88 TII or a 89+ Common block. I know the common block is better, but do I still have the internal goodies? Meaning forged crank and rods? Or are there no internal differences between the motors used in the 89 CSX's?

Yup. Like the Prego spaghetti sauce 'it's in there!' Both the forged crank and heavier Turbo II rods. I don't believe there's any difference.

What I'm curious to know is this. Did the Shadows delivered to Carroll to become tomorrow's '89 CSXs have Turbo II engines from the factory, or were they Turbo I engines rebuilt to Turbo II specs using the common block and 782 heads, changing only the crank, rods, and pistons?

Shelby Automobiles did not go into the block on any PRODUCTION cars they sold.

So the answer is no they did not pull the motor and swap out the crank, rods, pistons.

Okay, so that means the '89 Shadows had a factory common block Turbo II from the get go? For some reason I thought they only had Turbo I engines in that year.

I wasn't aware that any of the common block motors got the forged crankshaft.....I thought the only motors that got a forged piece were the 87/88 TII motors and the masi 16v?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the common block engines that got forged cranks included the '89 & '90 Turbo IV, the '89 Turbo II, and then the '91 to '93 Turbo III.

Also, to clarify further, the masi crank was completely different.

The TIII crank is the same as the TIV crank which is just an 89 T2 common block forged crank with a "gear" built on it for the balance shafts.

The masi is specific to the masi and weighs a good 20 pounds more than the T2 forged crank. Its huge.

Also, it is fully balanced from the factory and doesnt need balance shafts.

I got one here with me now actually

I did know that concerning the masi cranks.....I have never owned anything other than the traditional TI, 87/88 tII motors, and my current 2.5 TI....I guess I found no reason to read up on the others concerning internals. I am glad I don't have the forged crank any longer to be honest....unneccessary weight.
