Hi all. I'm in the process of rebuilding my 2.2 T2 and was wondering if the if the intermediate shaft has to be replaced for any reason? The motor had 250,000 kms on it, are these a must to replace?

Thanks

The shaft probably doesn't need replaced, but replace the bearings for it.

Check the Universal joint in the center of the intermediate shaft for any wear. If there is REPLACE IMMEDIATLY. This thing could leave you stranded. Trust me I know from expierence...(GRIN)

i think he`s talking about the intermmediate shaft INSIDE the engine for the oil pump/distributor, not the drive axle intermediate shaft

Yes exactly, I'm talking about the one inside the motor. Now, does this intermidiate shaft need replacing?

just check the bearing surfaces and gear teeth for any signs of wear or scoring. if it looks good, then it should be ok. just make sure you replace the bearings in the block for it.

for 20 bucks the local machine shop said they'd measure and inspect it to see how far it's worn from factory specs, is it worth it to get it checked as it did have 250, 000 kms on it.

I don't think you have to replace the shaft, but replace the two bearings/bushings if possible. You can buy the bearings at www.FWDPerformance.com but it requires a special tool to remove and install the bearings. Does anybody know where to get the special intermediate shaft bearing installer tool?

When I resealed my 2.5 T1, I found that the outer shaft bearing was chipped in two places. I didn't replace the bearings (lack of tool) and so far I haven't had a problem.

I think it's caused by the shaft spinning quicker than the bearing is designed for. So layers of the bearing flake away. Alot of T3's have been torn apart to find the larger I shaft bearing in horrible shape, but it never seems to cause any problems.

Clevite makes replacement bearing sets that sell for about $17? and includes both large and small I shaft bearings.

The tools you might be able to borrow from someone, or purchase from Miller/SPX. Actually I hate the larger bearing installation too. They didn't make it long enough and it tends to mar the bearing unless you wrap the tool carefully in teflon tape, and check it ever couple of whacks to make sure it hasn't ripped the teflon. Also lining up the bearings so the oil hole is in the right place can be kinda tricky.

Should have put that in my last post. Just happened to have a box sitting next to my PC. I think somewhere I also have the original bearings from my 26k mile T3. Pretty ugly for a motor with so few miles.
