Well, my bad. I broke the coolent return line fitting off in the black of my block. well... i've tried the eazy-out approach. I'm using the right size and everything. It will not come out. Absolutely not even a little. Can I just drill this out and re-tap it for a larger fitting?? Please say yes, this is the only thing keeping my car from running.

What about metal shavings? Is there anyway to limit the amount of them get inside the block?

Make sure they fall on the outside.

While drilling the vast majority will fall out anyway. Use a vacuum while tapping, maybe?

In any case, I don't think a couple shavings are gonna do any harm if they fall in.

If I add up every time I have hit my head on anything, it wouldn't be half of how many times I have hit my head on something greasy trying to do this.

What I found that works very well is to lube up the drill bit with some heavy gear grease or Vaseline jelly. The shavings will gunk up on the bit real good. "thumbs up

You don't actually have to drill the threads all the way out...you can increase your drill bit one size at a time(starting very small) until you just barely start to reach the block threads...then take a metal pick or tiny screw-driver and knock the remaining bolt pieces out.

I used this method on an exhaust manifold stud and no damage occured to the ALUMINUM threads of the head. Phew..."thumbs up
