still working on getting items together for my car... this weeks task is forged pistons... oh supercharged 3.0L

Anyway, no one really makes a forged piston, so I have a chance to be a little unique, so how effective would 'quenched' pistons be in increasing volumetirc efficency etc? the prinicple is sound, but how much extra would i be looking at for a custom bowl from the foot print of the head?

thanks!

The 3.0 pistons are already a perfect mirror of the head chamber. They have a VERY good quench area already. The motor also has a pretty low compression ratio (8.8:1 I think). I wouldn't mess with pistons for it at all. The factory ones are a great design and very tough.

Frank, I cannot remember, are you going to be using the SOHC 3.0L or going with the DOHC stuff from the stealth?

hehehehe, they are quenched. i was looking at them last night (a open motor was in the shed and didnt go and look at them). i will just get a almost perfect replica of them with slight changes because the combustion bowl for the head will change because of deshrowding for bigger valves. i should be fine with that

and its a sohc.

quench is good for generating turbulence in the chamber, which reduces the possibility of detonation. but it really has nothing to do with volumetric efficiency.

its when your combustion bowl of the piston matches the footprint on the head's combustion bowl.

Or more acurately, "quench" is when there is a small clearance area between the cylinder head and the piston top. This area is very small and forces the air fuel mixture out of it as the piston rises. This mixes the air and fuel more effectively and promotes a faster burn of the mixture. It also serves to keep the gases flowing aroung the combustion chamber (turbulance) and prevent hot spots and detonation.
