So, with the shafts removed and all, could you just swap in a 2.2 pan and pickup and then use the original amount of oil? Are there clearance issues with the 2.5 crank?

I have 2 TII oil pans and pickups, my 2.5 pan is beat to hell.

Thanks,
D'Arcy.

All that extra oil is good! For good measure I built a windage tray in my pan. As for the crank gear, leave it on, it acts as a slinger to stop oil from being blown onto the seal and have a leak you can't fix!!!!!!!!!!

In reply to asless : this is exactly what i done except i used a one piece washerbolt that extended over the hole and i dont recall using anything else to tap into the small hole. I used loc-tite as well to secure the bolt from backing out and torqued...german (good'n- tight)...LOL. Anyway, i had to remove the pan for rebuild and checked that sucker out to be sure of integrity...and it's still solid tight (after 1yr).
In reply to shelbyterrier : i'm not sure what you're asking when you said "the chain removal and leave it that way"??... please reply.

I just did it on my 2.5...just go to the hardware store and get a set screw(No head the little allen pattern inside) and then you wont have to worry about a head.

Opted for the 2.2 common block pan on my 2.5. I have some good things and some bad things to say. OIL: i use 4.5 QTS...gotta love it.

I used the 2.2 pan for this reason.:
With out the balance shafts, all that oil in the pan, albeait good to have extra oil capacity, can be bad. THe consensus on this list had said on many other posts on this subject is that a 2.5 pan with out the shafts, allows the oil to be blown up the sides of the pan, when the crank is spinning. or when the car corners, causing possible oil starvation issues. Ever try to hold a bucket filled to the brim with oil steady??? HEHEHE good luck. THe oil is quite likely to move around, so this therory is sound.

So i went with the 2.2 pan....but now i think there is another issue with this set up. The 2.2 pan has less volume, and the 2.5 crank obviously causes more windage in the pan due to it's longer stroke. Hence theroetically, less oil in the pan, and possible oil starvation issues.

The best selection would be a 2.5 L pan with a windage screen or baffle. This would be the smart way to go. Unfortunately, they are a bit pricey.....oh well.

I hear you, thats why you build your own windage tray. Get some thin sheet metal and cut, weld away. Took my like 4-6 hrs to build but my time is cheap!!!!!!!!!!! Seems to work, no problems in 12,000 kms and the extra 1.5L of oil is a bonus"thumbs up
