With the chronic "spun rod bearing" problem I've seen a lot of in TD land, is there a better way to get oil to them? I noticed one company selling used rods with the holes on the big end drilled out for better oiling. Does this work? Has anyone done it? Please give details. Anything to help with those spun rod bearings.
Thanks

the hole in the big end is to lube the cylinder wall and piton pin, the hole in the crank is what takes care of the rod bearing, when you size rods too tight is when you spin bearings or you get debree in the oil, I size my clearance to .002" on all my motors, chevys, fords, chrysler. I've never had a problem with a spun bearing, when you size below .0018" is when you start to see problems, especially when you "hammer your motor".

Isn't the BIG end the crank end? where the rod bearings are. I'm new, but I really thought I had this term right. The small end is the piston pin isn't it? I'm confused... LOL
Thanks,

You're right, big=crank, small=pin.

Are you sure you're not thinking about drilling the small end? It's a fairly common procedure. You drill a small hole from the top down into the small end bushing. This helps oil get into the bushing.

I bet that is what I'm thinking about. So to do this, I'd have to pull the piston off and drill a ?? size hole in the top. I'd like to have the piston pin lubed. I know it doesn't get much oil up there. So what size hole, and are there any important things I should know?
Thanks,

From the MP 2.2/2.5 Speed Secrets Book (I don't have it, just quoting from a post on the SDML):

Connecting rods with fill floeating pins that are to be used in racing
applications should have the small end of the rod drilled with a small
hole (approximately 3/32") for increased piston pin oiling. The best
location for this oiling hole is the top of the rod above pin.
Pin oiling holes in the sides weaken the rod itself and therefore are
definitely not recomended. The one hole in the top does the best job
oiling the pin and maintaining the rod's strength.

In addition to this, you need to chamfer (or at least clean up) the edge of the hole you drilled in the bushing.
