What is the easiest/best way to install the distibutor/oil pump shaft so that the two are timed correctly?

Pull the intermediate shaft out of the motor. Remove the distributor. This way you can move the oil pump gear with the shaft out.

You want to line up the timming marks on the crank and intermediate shaft so that your at TDC. Test fit your pump to make sure it fits flush against the sealing surface of the block because some pumps need to be ground on to fit. Then install the pump so that the distributer grove in the pump is paralel with the block. Now when you install the distributer the rotor will be facing the #1 plug wire and it will fire right up.
