DOHHHH

as one who spent $450 for replacement balance shafts on a mopar once (i didnt know any better then) when the chain broke.

take those miserable peices of evil out and hurl them into the dump.....plug yer oil hole......yikes

the dirty rotten mechanic who replaced em swore on his momma's grave that the motor would blow thru the hood.

went to mopar dealer in holland michigan.....he said motor will blow apart......without em...and this was in 2002

Just remember, 2.5 Dakotas never had balance shafts and they seem to hold together just fine.

yeah, but you know what? There is no plug listed for the oil feed hole Does this mean that they were not drilled, or what?

You won't find a premade plug, just drill the oil hole and tap it accordingly, then run a bolt in with a good thread lock on it and cut the head of the bolt off flush with the block. POOF instant plug.

Questioning Authority? I am at the point where the "authority" of dealers and service places doesn't hold much water. In most cases I know more about my car than they do and I am only taking it to them because I am too busy at the time to do what is needed myself.

Yep, knew that. My point was, did the 2.5 dakota blocks comwe through undrilled? if not, then why is there no service plug listed?

You don't need balance shafts, I removed mine and its a bit rough at idle due to the Mopar HD motor mounts but not that bad.

Hes a technical tidbit I have learn't the hard way. DO NOT take off the chain gear on the crank, it acts as a slinger and without it, you will have a front crank seal leak that you can't fix, trust me, I have one and I am going to have to pull the engine and put it back in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT!!! You left the chain on??? Yep, you're a canadian I've taken those things off the first 2.5 Daytona I had along time ago. No problems after taking the chain off either. Here, read this from the man. In case you people haven't figured it out yet, THIS GUY KNOWS WHAT HES DOING!!!!!!!!! BOOKMARK THIS PAGE!!!!!!!!!! WWW.THEDODGEGARGE.COM LOOK UNDER TURBODATABASE, EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW!!!!! Anyway here it is on the balance shafts:

Balance Shafts
2.5 SOHC and 2.2 16V owners can remove the balance shafts in the oil pan and pickup 10-14 hp for free- they are for secondary order vibrations and are not needed for normal operation. I have done several turbo and non-turbo cars with no ill effects. Some people have voiced concerns over this mod saying the shafts are need to control vibration, to which I respond that's nonsense! Did you know 88-95 2.5 Dakotas don't come with them? There is no room for them in the truck oil pan!

Just drop the oil pan, remove the 6 bolts holding the balance shafts in, cut the chain attached to the front of the crankshaft and remove it. Plug the oil feed hole, which is located next to the number 1 main cap, with a pipe plug (you will have to tap out the hole), reinstall the oil pan and your done.

Another bonus is less engine noise and a pan that holds another quart of oil.

WARNING!!!!
YOU MUST PLUG OFF THE OIL FEED HOLE TO THE BALANCE SHAFTS
OR LOSS OF OIL PRESSURE AND ENGINE DAMAGE WILL OCCUR!!!!

True story about balance shafts! Just learned this one from a retired Chrysler engineer- Seems the only reason the 1990-1993 2.2 Turbo III & VNT motors had balance shafts was that the guys on the assembly lines were forgetting to install balance shafts on the 1989 2.5 motors after a holiday!! It's true! The block would come down the line after a holiday or weekend and the assembly line guys would forget to install the shafts in the first couple of engines causing massive oil pressure loss.

The fix? Install balance shafts in ALL the TURBO ENGINES as of the 1990 model year.

If you reread what I wrote, I took the chain and "CRANK SPROCKET" off. If I left the chain on It would make one #$!$# of a mess! As for being a Canadain, thanks for the compliment.
Oh, as for Donovans site, thanks for the tip but been there done that "thumbs up
And what I said was that the sprocket acts as a slinger and stops the oil from being shot at the crank seal which causes an oil leak you can't fix, doh!

Ok, that makes more sense I thought I read chain! You'll have to forgive me. I get off working 3rd shift and just have to do something dodge related. So I get on here half asleep barely being able to see, and start typing lol As for the canadian thing, purely joking "thumbs up , I have alot of canadian friends.
