Ghetto compression fix

Ok, here we go... I have an 86 Shelby Charger motor in my car. Low compression in #one, or maybe it is #4. Whatever one is closest to the alternator. I have two good sets of TII pistons and rods. If they are std bore, and the motor in my car is std bore. Can I put rings on these, and drop them in my car?

you need to perform a leak down test to determine if it IS the piston/rings in Cylinder #1 that is the problem.

It could be an -intake and/or exhaust valve
-head gasket
-camshaft (lobes worn) or related parts, i.e, lifters, followers.

I will do that today. But if it is the rings, I can use the TII pistons in this motor right? They are both std bore. I did figure that out today.

you'll want to have the cylinders honed (or else the new rings won't seal right). and maybe have the crank turned and get new bearings.

?

I am with you on the new bearings but not on the crank turning.

There is no reason for that.

As for the pistons. Well I did a ghetto patch that way once and it worked.

However, in my case, I had a lettered piston. I couldnt find one of that year with that letter (85 D piston). I did eventually find another year with that letter so I used it. (88 D piston)

Of course it forced me to use 1 88 rod with my other 3 85 rods but it worked fine and it sealed perfectly.

That's why, I said "maybe." We don't know what shape the engine of this car is in. The crank could be scored, have some scratches or something. Hell, we don't even know if he actually needs to re-ring it; it could just need a headgasket.

Thanks for the vote of confidence about the headgasket. The headgasket is still good. It blows blue smoke.

Blue smoke under accleration is ring wear. Under decelration is valve guide seals. Go down the highway at 50 or so with someone behind you, lean on it in 4th for 5 seconds or so and then let off while still in gear clutch engaged. have your friend tell you when the smoke comes out.

could also be smoke from bad seals in the turbo

Will bad seals in a turbo leak on the ground?

bad seals on a lot of things *could* leak on the ground. if it is leaking internally it would have to be pretty bad to leak on the ground through the turbo. if you have oil under the engine it might be a separate issue than your exhaust smoke problem. check the rear main seal, valve cover, turbo oil drainback for dripping leaks under the engine. they are some of the usual suspects.
