Is there 3 kinds of crankshafts? 1. cast 2. forged and 3.billet I've just heard that the intercooled 2.2 had a different crankshaft then a non intercooled motor. Am I being fed a bunch of hoowy and there are only two cranks, and if so I guess I need a 1988 forged crankshaft #2 rod bearing is screwed on mine.

Just 2, no billet.

However, the 89+ cranks are different. (not stronger, just incompatible)

so if you have common block.. and want to use a 2.2 crank in it.. can you use an 8 bolt crank or does it have to be.. a 2.2 common block crank?

Well aside from that question not making any sense....I will try and answer anyhow.

The CB crank *is* an 8 bolt crank, but so are the later model non-CB's. Hence why the question isnt making a lot of sense.

The difference is the size of the snout on the end.

This is why they are not compatible.

If you have a CB and want a 2.2 you have 2 choices. 89+ 2.2 N/A crank, or 89+ T2/T4 Forged 2.2 crank.

Technically you could use a T3 crank as well provided you change the sprocket on the end to a T2 style.

The T4 cranks have a sprocket on them to run the balance shafts.

Otherwise, they are no different.

Its just too bad that isnt what you said.

You said "... can you use an 8 bolt crank or does it have to be.. a 2.2 common block crank? "

You didnt say "can I use a *non common block* 8 bolt crank instead of a CB crank"

The first sentence implies one is 8 bolt, and the other is not.
