I am having a bi**h of a time with my oil pan gasket. I have tried 3 times now and it still leaks.

I removed my balance shafts and put a new rubber gasket on. The rubber end pieces moved and it leaked. Tried that again, it leaked. Removed rubber pieces and used silicone and rubber end pieces. It still leaks a bit. What is the trick???????? I am going nuts here. Please help.

What is a gasket?

Use Mopar RTV.

Bah! RTV is the spawn of satan. Found a ton of it in the oil pickup on my dead engine (died of a cracked block, but had crap for oil pressure before that). Anyways, I've always had great success with Anerobic gasket maker.

The end pieces should snap into place on the bottoms of the main seal housings. I usually spread a thin layer of RTV on them before I snap them in just to hold them there, then put a good bead over the "feet" onto the block. Then lay a bead on the pan and shove it up there.

Is it just me, or does "lay a bead on the pan" sound like a euphamism for a #2?

I use the fel-pro rubber gaskets and just put a very thin coat of RTV on the block just enough to hold the gasket in place. If I had the motor on a stand upside down I do not use any RTV. I have done this on the stand 3 times with the same gasket with NO leaks.

Is it a regular or commonblock? You can get a one piece gasket from fel-pro for the commonblocks (I have yet to find one for a regular block). The one-piece I have has been used probably 3 times with NO sealant at all....it is a very fine piece.

Go to autozone and tell them you want the most expensive oil pan gasket...that will be the one piece. I think it was $35 or so? But hell...it's reusable and saves a ton of time (no scraping RTV!)

The one piece gaskets rock!!!!

I am not sure why Mopar didnt design them this way from the start.

if you're having repeat problems don't forget to check the pan before blaming the gasket... if you don't have a (relatively) flat amting surface it'll ahve no hope of sealing barring huge quantities of your favorite sealing goop in just the right spot.

Why Mopar didn't use the one piece...... Common we all the know the answer, silicone is cheaper. 2.2's and 2.5's are cheap budget engines (in all honesty). Mopar should have designed many things to help with leaks (one piece valve covers- not installed until 89), one piece oil pan gaskets (never installed), rubber gaskets between the water pump and housing (not done until 89), and the list of things that should have been done from the beginning goes on and on...
