Its a process where they heat...cool...heat...cool the metal to like push all of the atoms togethore, and make it more dense, makes things stronger..

that's heat treating, i thought shotpeening is where they shoot little metal bb's at your parts which eliminates any surface cracks or sharp edges where a crack is likely to start. i could be wrong. most good machine shops have the equipment to do it.

You're right, in shotpeening they basically bead blast your part but instead of glass beads it usually metal shot. The process leaves a bunch of curved indentations on your part instead of the sharp peaks and valleys caused by casting/forging. This reduces the chance of a crack starting at one of these sharp points.

how much good does shotpeening do?is it worth it on a high hp application(350+hp)?or is it better to get a set of h.d. rod from forward motion?

In my opinion shotpeening is worth it in any high hp application. It will make your stock rods stronger, and make the H.D. rods even stronger then they are now. Its realitively inexpensive to do, and its definitally cheaper then a rod out the side of you block!

another treatment process you can try is cryo. it makes a part almost twice as strong. for rods, there is something that i just heard about, not sure if it's new or not, but it's called ion beam treating. neither are as cheap as shotpeening though.

Dumhoffs charged me 7 dead presidents a rod to do mine a few yrs ago. I would believe it would be close to the same today and any descent motor shop should be able to do it.

Shotpeening was developed during the second world war to make aircraft engine connecting rods more dependable (a good thing) without having to resort to labor intensive methods like polishing.
The peening process puts the surface metal in compression and allows it to absorb more stress cycles without developing cracks which would lead to catastrophic failure ( a bad thing ).
