Well, finally got the '85 daytona turbo z running right... everything but the wastegate is being a bitch. It's overboosting and I was trying to figure it out. It stopped smoking.. (it was explained to me that from sitting it could be a stuck ring, I am not a seasoned mechanic, so I don't know) going down the road, hard into the throttle... still surging... oh well, back to the drawing board. I get back and the dipstick tube is popped out and it has squirted about 1/2 quart of oil all over the engine bay. Looks like I need a rebuild. I may try to get by with rings/seals/bearings... but I don't know. I'm pretty broke right now.

Also: Whoever played with the vacuum lines on this car was smoking crack. They were wrapped in electrical tape and some of them were broken almost all the way in two :P

I'm still loyal and I'm still going to get that car on the road and running right. I may just try to pick up a junkyard shortblock or a longblock, though I did notice my car has a 782 head on it. Plain as day cast into the head, 782... I have no idea how interchangable they are... I'm assuming they are or I have a non-stock motor.

a 782 is just a swirl head, it was probably replacing a cracked or warped 287 head. they are interchangeable. sounds like you have quite a project in front of you, don't give up, when these things run right it makes all the hard work worthwhile. good luck

Just remember that the 782 head is on both turbo and n/a motors but they change the valve material on turbos and some are crossdrilled.
