My bottom end is just about done. Oversize 2.5 venolia's, arp hardware, hope it holds together, but my question is breaking it in. This is my daily driver and once it's heart is transplanted it's back on the road. I'm in Canada, so for the next 2 months the car's going to see -20 to -35 celcius temps. I'll plug it in in the mornings, but the motor's gonna be cold anyways. My question is what oil to use. I'm thinking conventional 5w30, I'm thinking of doing a quick oil change after about 300 km using same oil for the next oil change. How many km's until I should be getting into the boost, should I be driving on the hiway for the first while or not? I want this motor to last and take some abuse so any helps would be great. Thanks.

At startup get it to 2000 rpm and keep it there for 10-15 minutes. Check for leaks and set timing. Change oil. The first few miles should be driven somewhat agressively, don't be afraid of going into boost a few pounds. You want those rings to seat quickly and well. Drive normally to slightly agressively for 500 miles. Oil change. Try to stay away from prolonged idling for the first 150 miles or so. Use a quality motor oil(Valvoline, Castrol, Havoline, Mobil), no synthetics until after 500 miles. That's about it. 5-30 should be good for the temps.

No, I hammer on it!

1/2 hour of idle, change oil, tow it 16 hours, run 11's :big grin:

This tank will never run 11's. I'd be happy with low 13's. We'll see I guess.

Sorry Ken, too used to giving instructions to customers. Gotta cover your butt when you give them 'instructions' on what to do with thier new engines. None the less it's not bad advise. Basically there are two schools of thought on this idea.
1. Be easy on it for a while.
2. Drive it like you stole it! :big grin:

I've always been easy on them, that's the way I was taught. And that's the way Ford/Mazda tell us techs to do it on the PDIs. Maybe I'm too careful, maybe not.

I wouldn't hold it at 2000 rpm for 15 mins, theres no need, you only do this on small blocks to break the cam in??????? other than that, great advice guys!"thumbs up

I read an article that advocated going hard on the engine with-in the first 32km/20miles was the thing to do. The fellow did it for his motorbikes and they gained more power for it. I tired to find the link but had no luck. It was posted on TD.com somewhere a while back (June??)

Going hard was up a hills, high revs, down shifting etc. non-constant speeds.

Regular oil and a quick oil change. I changed mine at 50km and had the big ph8a filter on. I followed up with another change at 500km after which I am back to my regular intervals.

At winter time 0w oil is the best. If you rew engine before lambda wakkes up, it ll eat a gallon just for warm up.
