It's stainless steel safety wire and it should be .032". You don't have to change it but if you're dying to you can. Just get a can of safety wire from most places that sell aviation or racing supplies, cut to length and install. LRE says to use a dab of CYA glue if you have a hard time getting it to stay in place.

Not all of us use stainless, I use copper. If it was brass in color, it may be a brass or copper wire.

Interesting. I've never heard of that. Doesn't the copper just mash down flat?

No, it just makes an indentation in the fire ring of the head gasket.
